<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Winterfest is a fun filled 2-day street fair with plenty of vendors selling crafts, antiques, motorcycle accessories and more. This will be the 34nd Annual Winterfest. The tradition started 34 years ago as a way to welcome the city's Winter Visitors.

Lake Havasu City is famous for its warm winters and people come from near and far to bask in our winter sun. We know these visitors as Snow Birds. These Snow Birds represent a large part of the city's economy and all are happy to have them visit year after year.

Ever year at Winterfest, the local restaurants have several booths and offer sampling of their specialties. Some years it is really windy but this event still brings out the attendees. I would have to say at least a third of the town turned out last year, at least 10,000 people each day.

Every year there are many arts and crafts vendors, some were actually handcrafted but the majority of the jewelry and decor looked mass produced. We did find some very original things and lots of great food. If you go, be sure to try one of the Portuguese hot dogs, they are awesome.

Maybe you know why turkey parts show up at the store in off season times? I don't know but always get happy when they do. Five or six times a year 2-packs of turkey legs, thighs, wings and breasts start showing up for a week or two. That's when you get a little of Thanksgiving Dinner without all the hassle. And oh, those turkey sandwiches!

The best part of these turkey pieces is that they have all their bones. That makes a world of difference in flavor town. .

So when the our grocer puts them out, I am quick to grab a pack or two. It's a great way to enjoy turkey in the off season and save on sliced turkey at the deli counter. Really, there is no comparison for a sandwich. Sometimes I roast these turkey parts just for the sole purpose of a creating a great turkey sandwich.

Here is my favorite way to roast turkey thighs.

Roasted this way works for a hot turkey sandwich with a side of mashed potatoes smothered in gravy or a cold turkey on fresh rye bread with some Swiss cheese sandwich!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Owning a retail store is challenging even in the best of times. Take a global recession and a really small resort town and the challenge might unbearable....
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Only a true passion for beads and real sense of community breaks through those challenges and provides our little town with a unique bead shop.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I found the Havasu Bead Studio when I moved to the lake in 2005. It was a great place to shop for beads and beading supplies but also for inspiration.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I've long since moved to Desert Hot Springs in California, the great recession is way over and I was looking for a beading class in town.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Then I remembered the bead shop near the lake. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So, I dropped in to their website and yippee! They are still going strong.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The shop is run Lisa Vitela, the owner of Havasu Bead Studio. Her passion for vintage jewelry inspired her ever-popular bead shop.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Havasu Bead Studio is the only artist-owned bead store in the area. They opened in 2002 and have grown a lot over the past 16 years. They have free classes and their massive inventory will inspire you!

Do you need Production Pieces?

Unique, one-of-a-kind crafts are wonderful to make and to own, but if you are selling your crafts for profit then production pieces are critical. Although they may not be as exciting to make, having a good back stock of your top sellers will help you be prepared for the future. This goes for all types of crafters from the jewelry artist to the seamstresses, wood workers and painters. The most successful professional crafters are well aware of this fact and maintain large inventories of their best sellers.

As the owner of an HandmadeCatalog.com, I know buyers consistently request large quantities of the same items for parties, as bridesmaid’s gifts, baby and bridal shower favors and for events like proms and weddings. During the holidays we see these requests explode. Many people make gift giving easier by sending each relative or friend the same item. Business owners often choose to give all their employees the same gift and will order dozens of one particular item. Handmade gifts are gaining popularity as corporate give-a-ways too and you should be prepared to fill these types of orders.

Production pieces are also a necessity for any craft fairs or shows you do. In addition to your one-of-a-kind creations, be sure to bring along plenty of completed production pieces. If possible, bring your craft supplies to the show and work on building your inventory while you are there during the slow periods. Shoppers love to watch as you create; it not only proves that the item is truly handmade, it gives you a chance to show how much detail and attention actually go into your crafts.

How you decide which items should be stockpiled depends greatly on previous sales. When you have an item that sells regularly, you can be fairly certain that this item should be created in large quantities. If you create items that can be personalized, prepare them to the point that all is left is the personalization. Take your easy-to-create, less-expensive items and turn them into production pieces as well.

Another benefit of making and keeping a healthy reserve of your best sellers is that you can save on supplies by buying in bulk. Just knowing what it takes to make several pieces of one style allows you to buy supplies in bigger quantities. If you can afford it and have storage room, buy several months worth of raw materials so that you never run out. Then set aside a couple days each week or month just to work on your production pieces.

Rushing to fill a large order is often frustrating. When you are in a hurry, you might encounter difficulty in finding the right materials quickly, you may become fatigued and the quality of your work might suffer. Having enough stock on hand will eliminate these pitfalls and create a better, more enjoyable craft business.

Keep on making those one of kind items that we all treasure, just don't forget there might be a large quantity order for one single style of your items right around the corner.

I just finished watching the first episode of NBC's new show called Making It. The show stars comedians Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman and pits crafters against each other for bragging rights and an adorable patch.

I don't watch a lot of television these day. Mostly I like to craft and work my websites as much as possible. Even still I've managed to tune in whenever I hear about a TV program involving crafting. Most are hard to watch and I guessed that crafting just doesnt' relate to TV whether it be a tutorial, or a competition.

Until now!

When Making It aired last night, I was already in bed but first thing this morning I started the show thinking here we go again, another dull TV attempt at cashing in on our craft community. Then Nick and Amy starting joking around and proved me totally wrong.

Here is a show about crafters, crafting, drama, and most of all a TON of HUMOR. I laughed out loud several times, I teared up twice and I totally fell in love with all the makers and all of their creations.

Nick is actually one of us, a real crafter! He's into woodworking and somehow that really ties the show together as Amy acts like she know nothing about making things.

Never in a million years could I create the things the makers did but I finished the show feeling like I could.

Feeling like everything was possible and that crafting DOES belong on TV and it can be extremely entertaining and inspirational.

I have felt for a while that a new Arts and Crafts Movement was a-brewing and this show can do nothing but further the cause. It seems our love of technology and instant gratification never seem to diminish our desire to make things.

How very human of us.

Learn how to make your own padded headboard with step by step instructions and detailed diagrams.

You're about to learn how to make your very own padded headboard. This is a terrific way to give yourself a new bed without paying thousands of dollars.

This project is super easy and it's amazing how good your bed will look with a padded headboard in the fabric that matches your decor.

So lets get started!

Supplies

1/4" plywood board measuring the width of your bed x 48" (have your hardware store cut it for you)
(4) 5-foot 1"x3" boards (For a twin and queen bed, you can get away with 3 boards)
1" flat head screws (I used #6 screws)
4 yards of face fabric high loft batting (you want a piece larger than your plywood measurements
1/2" - 1" thick foam (the same dimensions as your plywood... you may need 2 packages)
1 roll of 1/2" wide Steam-A-Steam2 double adhesive tape.
Staple gun and staples
Iron and ironing board
Sharp fabric scissors
Measuring tape > Drill > Adhesive (Ask you hardware store for an adhesive to stick foam to wood)
Utility knife (to cut the foam)

Collect all your supplies. Once you have all of your items, you can easily have this project done in a couple of hours.

** You can find Steam-A-Steam 2 at <a href="http://www.draperysewingsupplies.com/" jscontent="urlCorrectionForDisplay" jstcache="17" jsvalues="href:urlCorrection;.jstdata:$this" style="background-color: #f7f7f7; color: #1155cc; font-family: "Segoe UI", Tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; text-decoration-line: none;">http://www.draperysewingsupplies.com/

Make the Frame

First we're going to make the wood frame of your headboard. Once we finish this, then we'll move on to covering it with your fabric.

Step 1. Lay your 1" x 3" boards side by side on the ground
Step 2. Lay the plywood onto the boards
Step 3. Align the top edges of the 1x3s with the top edge of the plywood
Step 4. Align a 1x3 along each side edge of the plywood and center the other 2 (or 1)
Step 5. Using a 1/8" drill bit, drill a hole through the plywood and 1 x3 boards 2" from the top edge
Step 6. Drill another hole 2" from the bottom edge of the plywood
Step 7. Drill a third hole in about the middle of the 1x3 boards
So each 1x3 board should now have 3 holes.
Step 8. Using your drill, screw a flathead screw into each drilled hole... securing the plywood to the boards.

Upholster the Frame

You can put all your tools away now. The big stuff is done.

Now you're going to add the padding and cover the frame with fabric.
Step 1. Cut your foam to fit the plywood. You may need 2 pieces of foam... if so, place the foam edge to edge. Use a utilitly knife to trim off any excess foam.
Step 2. Remove the foam temporarily, and apply your adhesive to the plywood. Lay your foam back down onto the plywood. Align all your edges... make sure if you have 2 pieces of foam, the edges are right up against each other.
While your glue is drying, lets go piece your fabric!
Step 3. Roll out 60" of fabric (Panel A). Trim off the selvege edges. These are the side edges of your fabric. If you don't trim them off, your fabric will not lay flat.
Step 4. Fold under the side edges 1" and press well.
Step 5. Roll out another piece of fabric 60" long (Panel B). Trim off the selvege edges.
Step 6. Lay Panel B to the right of Panel A.
Step 7. Peel off the steam-a-steam adhesive strip from the roll and stick it to the left edge of Panel B. Now if you have a pattern to match, you may want to lay Panel A's folded edge on top of Panel B and match the pattern before sticking the adhesive strip to it.
Step 8. Peel off the paper backing on the adhesive strip.
Step 9. Press the folded edge of Panel A onto the adhesive strip on Panel B. Press with high steam.
Step 10. You can probably trim off a good width of fabric from Panel B and use it for the other side of Panel A.
Repeat the steps to adhere the 2 panels together. You will have one full fabric width as the center and 1 smaller panel on each side.
You want this pieced fabric panel to be at least 6" longer on each side than the plywood.
Step 11. Lay out the batting so that it is smooth on the floor.
Step 12. Lay your frame with foam onto the batting... foam side down... board side up.
Step 13. Pull the batting over the edges of the frame to the back and staple in place with your staple gun.
You'll need to cut the batting around the legs at the bottom edge. There's no wrong way to do this, just be neat.
Step 14. Lay your pieced fabric on the floor wrong side up. Measure across your Panel A and mark the center at the top and bottom edge.
Step 15. Measure across your frame and mark the center at the top and bottom edge.
Step 16. Lay your frame with batting on to the fabric... board side up... matching the center marks.
Step 17. Pull the fabric over the edges of the frame to the back and staple in place.
Now slide your headboard against the wall at the head of your mattresses. That's it!
And now you know how to make your own padded headboard...

Happy Upholstering!
I love leather, as many of you do.

I really enjoy having leather items in my home so back in 2006, when Mark joined our website and added his leather maps of course I was intrigued.

Mark's leather maps are HANDMADE, HAND TOOLED AND HAND PAINTED.

Mark also makes beautiful photo albums. The one shown here is entirely done by hand. The front is decorated with one of his own designs and his initials are burned on the back. The album becomes more beautiful the more it is touched. It is a work of art and it makes unique gift, unforgettable souvenir of your travels or handsome decoration. The size is 6"x4" (15x10 cm) It fits up to 80 6"x4" photos.

Another example of Mark's work are his wall hangings. This one is called Countries of the World and it is amazing. it is a political map of the world, burned on ox leather in an antique style but includes up to date geographical data. All the countries are clearly marked and named and four world areas are enlarged for more detailed view. The map is decorated with classical images and rope border. The surface is coated with natural paste which makes it look like an old, yellowed paper. The map is secured by leather straps and marupa wood rods. The piece can be used as decoration and as source of information. SIZE: 40x30 inches (100x75 cm)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Dry the skin of the turkey breasts with paper towels and put in a roasting pan on a wire rack, breast side up. Rub 4 tablespoons butter all over the surface of each breast and season them well with salt and pepper. Add the shallots to the bottom of roasting pan and cover shallots with the stock. Transfer the pan to the oven and roast until an instant-read thermometer registers 165 degrees F and the juices run clear, about 1 hour. (Begin checking the internal temperature after 45 minutes to prevent overcooking.) Remove the turkey breasts from the oven to a cutting board and tent with foil. Allow to rest while making the gravy.

Strain pan drippings into a small pot over low heat and bring to a simmer. In a small bowl mash together the remaining 2 tablespoons butter and flour with a fork, until a paste forms. Whisk into the simmering stock, season with salt and pepper, to taste, and cook until thickened.

Carve the turkey breast meat from the bone and arrange the slices on a serving platter. Serve with gravy on the side.

The Year of Fire Rooster only occurs once every 60 years.
The Fire Rooster leans towards being honest, clear-seeing and assertive. This year, just as roosters gather and protect their flock, people do well this year when gathered in groups and our relationships shall tend to flourish. Roosters are the alarm clocks of old and 2017 is a year of preciseness and exact timeliness. We will see if that rings true. The Year of the Monkey 2016 was wild and crazy, for sure.

Since I have a never ending love of chickens and roosters here are 5 stunning rooster quilt patterns to work this year and celebrate the Year of the Rooster 2017.

National Pie Day is one of my favorite holidays. I simply love homemade pies even though they are a bit of a pain to make. Sometimes I cheat and use a pre-made crust but other times that just won't do. If you love pie and are ready for a tangy, sweet creamy pie just keep reading.

Pears are in season here in California right now and they are so sweet. I had 3 large fresh pears and was planning to make my pear cake but thought about National Pie Day and went looking for pear pie recipes. I found a few and landed on the sour cream version. Darn happy I did, my first pear sour cream pie came out so good.

I tried this one from AllRecipes.com but most sour cream pie fillings are basically sugar, sour cream, flour, eggs, vanilla, salt and whatever you decide. I had pears so here we go:

Pear Sour Cream Pie

Pie Filling:
1/2 Cup Sugar
1 Cup Sour Cream
1/4 Cup AP Flour
1 Egg, beaten
1 Tsp. Vanilla Extract
1/4 Tsp. Salt

3-4 Fresh Pears, cored, chopped, peeled if you want, I left the skin on.

Combine all the ingredients except the pears. When filling is smooth, gently fold in the pears. Pour the filling into your prepared crust and bake @ 350 for 15 to 20 minutes *. Remove from oven, add topping and bake for 20-30 minutes more or until golden brown crust and pie center is set. Cool completely before serving, store leftovers in the refrigerator.

* While the pie is baking create the topping:
2/3 cup AP Flour
1/3 cup Sugar
5 TBS Melted Butter
2/3 Rolled Oats

Well, I have the pie bug now, think I will give this one a try next.
Zorro, the secret identity of Don Diego de la Vega is a fictional character from 1919.

This lawn goose is channeling him while sporting his famous Z outfit and carrying a might tiny sword. Zorro has been through a lot of changes but never before has he been turned into a lawn goose! Let your neighbors know there is a swashbuckler in the yard. The Zorro outfit has been crocheted in fade-resistant yarn and will delight all those that see him.
The Filet Crocheter only uses two stitches to create a grid-like lace. The create the design it any way they like. If you can draft your design on grid paper it will probably convert to Filet Crochet.

The 2 stitches used are the chain stitch and the double crochet stitch. Usually in one color, the crocheter uses Mercerised cotton crochet thread and the piece is worked in rows.

Common uses for Filet Crochet include tablecloths, window treatments and place mats.

The Filet Crochet is an unforgiving craft and it will not tolerate mistakes. Each stitch has to perfect and it may take over a year to complete a tablecloth such as the case with the one below.
